Most homes contain a range of toxic chemicals, in products such as toiletries, household cleaners and pesticides. Many of these end up going down the drain and entering the water system, causing problems for wildlife and, potentially, human health.

Scotland’s lochs, rivers and seas are world-renowned treasures, with a rich diversity of wildlife. If we want to keep these aquatic environments clean and healthy, we need to be careful what we put into our wastewater at home. The WaterSense campaign aims to help people make choices that minimise their impact on the water environment.

WaterSense has been working on Forfar Loch next to the Angus town of Forfar. Phosphates from household detergents are contributing to algal blooms in summer, which are suffocating the loch. We are calling on people in Forfar to choose phosphate-free detergents.

WaterSense is a partnership of WWF Scotland (funded by HSBC), the Scottish Executive, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and Scottish Water. Together we are campaigning to raise awareness of the toxic chemicals in everyday household products and the problems they can cause to the water environment.
